To prepare this snack of sheer perfection, start with standard pretzel twists to satiate the craving for saltiness. Then, cover the pretzels with gooey caramel sauce for the sweetness you desire. My favorite aspect of the caramel, aside from its obvious identity as sticky, sweet caramel, is the fact that it is made without corn syrup.

The true magic begins in the oven, where the caramel coating begins to bubble around each pretzel. Like those in gently simmering water, the bubbles break the surface of each salted pretzel, enveloping the edges with tiny pockets of caramel. Upon cooling, the capsules of caramel create layers of crispy, crunchy coating.


If, somehow, that doesn’t sound like enough for you, add a drizzle of chocolate atop these pretzels to really send them over the edge.

Crunchy Caramel-Covered Pretzels

Salty and sweet and drizzled with chocolate, these Crunchy Caramel-Covered Pretzels are sheer perfection.


  • 15 ounce bag pretzel twists (about 8 cups)
    For caramel sauce:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • ¼ cup half-and-half
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    For chocolate drizzle:
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips of your choice (semi-sweet, milk chocolate, dark, etc.)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil


  • Preheat oven to 250°F and coat a large baking sheet with cooking spray or cover with silicone baking mat.
  • In a small saucepan, melt the butter and with the half-and-half over medium heat. Add the sugar and salt to the melted butter and half-and-half and bring to a boil (still over medium heat), stirring constantly for 4 minutes or until a candy thermometer reaches 250°F. I set my kitchen timer for 4 minutes as soon as the caramel sauce began to boil and the timing was perfect.
  • Remove saucepan from heat and add baking soda and vanilla. Continue stirring, as the caramel sauce will become foamy upon adding the baking soda.
  • Pour caramel sauce over pretzels and toss to coat. Spread pretzels in an even layer on the baking sheet and bake at 250°F for 45 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes.
  • To prepare the chocolate drizzle, heat the chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave until melted, about 1 minute. Stir together thoroughly and drizzle over pretzels once they’ve finished baking. Let cool completely before eating. Store in an airtight container once cool.
